Abu Dhabi Golf Club primed and ready to host the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA

15 January 2019

With the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship Presented by EGA starting this week, Troon managed Abu Dhabi Golf Club are prepared to host golf’s biggest names

Abu Dhabi Golf Club’s fairways will be graced with some of the world’s best golfers this week as they compete to be crowned champion at the ‘Home of Champions’.

The course, which has been carefully conditioned over the last few months in preparation for the event, will be hosting its 14th staging of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA, which was elevated to Rolex Series status for the new season when the schedule announcement was made by the European Tour back in October.

The championship is often considered the unofficial season opener for many of the big name European and PGA Tour players competing, as attention of the golfing world turns to Abu Dhabi to see how these players will kick-start their competitive year.

As the host venue, Abu Dhabi Golf Club’s reputation is reflected in the fact that the top players flock time and time again to play the National course. Course record holder Henrik Stenson is set to make his 14th appearance in the tournament this week, and one man who will also be under the spotlight is Stenson’s fellow Ryder Cup player, Tommy Fleetwood, looking to win the event for a third time in a row.

Other players looking to stop Fleetwood’s amazing run in Abu Dhabi include strong American talents, World #2 Brooks Koepka and World #3 Dustin Johnson. Alongside them, a star-studded group of players such as Tyrrell Hatton, Louis Oosthuizen, Eddie Pepperell, Ian Poulter and Abu Dhabi Championship legend Martin Kaymer, will also be in attendance.

Ed Edwards, Abu Dhabi Golf Club General Manager, commented: “Much hard work and preparation has gone into getting the golf course in great shape for the tournament and we are very excited to host some of the world’s very best players again this week, who will undoubtedly create more great moments for golf fans to remember.

“This is one of the most highly anticipated tournaments in the calendar year, as it really sets a precedence for the year to come for these players. The tournament is graced with such a competitive field each year, and we feel that it is due to the high quality of our golf course, making it the ideal place for players to kick-start their 2019. With Fleetwood on the verge of winning the Championship for three years in a row everyone at the club is excited to see how the tournament unfolds this year.”

For all spectators coming to see the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship Presented by EGA, there are several opportunities for them in Abu Dhabi, both on and off the golf course. Visitors will not only be able to watch and enjoy this great golf event but can also experience the amazing culture that Abu Dhabi has to offer, including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Yas Island attractions. Furthermore, Yas Links and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club are on the doorstep of Abu Dhabi Golf Club for anyone wishing to extend their stay and play world class golf courses in Abu Dhabi.
