On the Golf Route with Chef Mauree, Sugar Beach Mauritius, in South Africa.

03 June 2019

With a wealth of exceptional golf courses, world-class greens and facilities and golf academies all with the most breathtaking of surrounds, it’s little wonder that Mauritius has fast made its way onto some of the top golfers’ golfing bucket lists. It’s a sublime, once-in-a-lifetime golfing destination, where post-round, golfers can make the most of the tropical island paradise, its natural wonders, sensational food and exotic offerings and experiences that need to be lived to be believed.

Some golfers in South Africa who haven’t yet made the trip to the sensational island paradise of Mauritius for a never-to-be-forgotten experience, however, were able to get a taste of the Mauritian experience during the Sun Resorts Friendship Tour 2019 that took place in February.

Here’s more about the fabulous Sun Resorts Friendship Tour 2019:

The tour spanned 10 incredible days
The unbelievable Sun Resorts Friendship Tour took place for the second time ever this past February in the gorgeous country of South Africa. Over 10 days and 7 different stops, 700 participants were able to make the most of the amazing destination and fabulous golfing opportunities while being able to relish Mauritian hospitality, phenomenal Mauritian rum-based cocktails and local Mauritian dishes (more on this below!)

Sugar Beach’s very own Chef Mauree formed an integral part of this tour
As part of the tour, the esteemed Executive Chef at Sugar Beach, Chef Krishna Mauree, delighted golfers with his Mauritian dishes and delicacies along the way. Not only was he able to experience the destination and spoil the participants with sensational food, but he was really able to grow and learn each day. While he travelled with a team from Sun Resorts, he was the only one in the kitchen.

At each of the 7 stops, he found himself in a new kitchen with a new team and very little time to adapt, and yet he did so wonderfully. This is what Chef Mauree had to say of his experience, “It was really a pleasure to share the Mauritian culinary experience with the golfers in South Africa and see them enjoy what I’ve cooked.”

Chef Mauree had a fair bit of planning to do to ensure he had what he needed

Before the tour kicked off, Chef Mauree planned each detail to a T. He filled us in: “Before going to South Africa, I contacted the different chefs in charge of each kitchen. Through these initial discussions, we set the menus and made the purchase orders for the different ingredients needed”. This way, he ensured that he could easily and seamlessly prepare his Mauritian meals for the participants, with everything needed at his fingertips.

This is what a day on the tour looked like for our chef

Every day he would start at 7:00 by meeting with the kitchen's Executive Chef in the kitchen itself. He would take stock of how many guests would be eating, which ingredients would be needed and who his team would be so that they could help him with his mise-en-place and plating. He enjoyed the experience of working with the South Africans, saying “I must also say that the staff over there were very keen to learn about Mauritian food and culture”.

One of the finest moments for Chef Mauree happened at one of South Africa’s finest golf course

One of Chef Mauree’s biggest highlights of the tour was the experience at the renowned Pearl Valley Golf Estate. He elaborated by saying “Together with the team over there, we prepared a 3-course gala lunch from scratch for 140 people attending a Charity Auction event with Sun Resorts as the partner. Even though I only had a very short time to prepare it, I managed to do it without compromising the food quality. Everyone really enjoyed it.”

Overall, the magical Sun Resorts Friendship Tour was a great success

Chef Mauree absolutely loved the experience of the tour and saw it as a success for Sun Resorts as a whole. He mentioned that “[the tour] was a very good opportunity to promote Sun Resorts, our golf courses and our island to the different golfers we came across during the tour. We will surely reap the benefits and see more and more golf tourists coming to our hotels in the coming months.”

And of course, his greatest joy was being able to share a small piece of Mauritius with the participants; he stated: “It was a pleasure to share our Mauritian culinary experience with the golfers and see them enjoy what I’ve cooked.”
