Garland Lodge & Resort, Michigan - a review by Joe Barnes

18 December 2018

Wow Garland! It had been many years since we last visited this incredible internationally acclaimed oasis nestled in the pristine forest just outside Lewiston Michigan, USA. In one word …. Impressive! World Class in every way.

Our incredible host this trip was Mr. Aaron Gentry Director of Sales who personally escorted our team throughout the property while filling us in on all the special improvements that have been made to Garland since our last visit some 8 years ago.

Today’s wonderful version of Garland maintains the traditions and ambiance of the past but more importantly has really stepped up its game to compete with the best world class resorts in Northern Michigan.

Name a special comfort you would like to have and Garland has it in a major way. The beautiful rustic and private cabins and the main lodge rooms are still available but just wait til you see what they have added.

French Country Villas are beckoning you. One simply cannot comprehend how over-the-top these accommodations are until actually viewing them. Huge post and beam rooms and bedrooms with the best beds that money can buy. Fireplaces for those cooler evenings and every villa has its own BBQ, hot tub and pool table. Fully supplied kitchens with granite countertops and top of the line cutlery, dishes, cookware and utensils. Everything a golf group needs to have a first class …world class golf getaway.

If cooking is not your thing fear not. The Tamarack Dining Room and the Antler’s Bar and Grill await. Dining on the outstanding patio beside Antler’s is a perfect place to have that after round drink. The service and the people at Garland are terrific. The food is outstanding and the surroundings unique in all of golf. Ask to see the monthly food calendar where there’s a special cooked up 6 days a week or order off the menu 7 days a week. The choice is yours.

Garland specializes in creating the perfect golf experience for groups (large or small), couples and ladies only outings.

A great practice putting green and 4 beautifully maintained championship golf courses with teeing areas to suit all levels of ability await. Whether you play Fountains, Monarch, Reflections or Swampfire, you will be sure to see all types of wildlife. Deer, eagles, water fowl, turtles and many others live in this wonderful place. The best club in your bag when you play might well be your camera so be prepared.

The Fountains course features what else? …. fountains and water hazards to challenge the best players. Designed by Ron Otto, Fountains plays at just under 6800 yards and has 6  par 3’s, par 4’s and par 5’s. All impeccably maintained.

Monarch is a big golf course playing at just under 7200 yards. Monarch is perfect for the “big bangers” but requires strategic ball placement as well. Just right for the higher handicapper to get into the wallets of those who like to hit the “big dog” long.

Reflections is the Garland golf course for the thinking person. Playing at just under 6800 yards from the tips, Reflections boasts 6 par 5s, 6 par 4s and 6 par 3s. This course will make you “reflect” on how perfect life can be at this world class golf resort. Hence the name Reflections. Thought the course name was about water didn’t you?

Swampfire….the name says it all. Bring your “A” game and your thinking cap. You are going to need them! A shot maker’s dream course with emphasis on accuracy of all clubs in your bag. Bent grass fairways, outstanding putting surfaces and lots of water. A true test of your abilities and your patience on the shortest but quite possibly the most challenging of Garland’s 4 championship courses.
