Cape Kidnappers + Kauri Cliffs named in Golf Digest’s Complete 200 Greatest Golf Courses

17 April 2018

CAPE KIDNAPPERS ranks #28 & KAURI CLIFFS ranks #75

Two of New Zealand’s most renowned golf courses have again been named among the best in the world in the annual Golf Digest (US) Magazine’s Complete 200 Greatest International Golf Courses – with Cape Kidnappers at #28 and Kauri Cliffs at #75.

The media house has also named the two courses among their Editors' Choice for Best Golf Resorts in Australia and New Zealand.

The Golf Digest rankings are one of the most revered within golf course rankings and include only one criteria, “overall greatness”. The award is scored by both American and international panellists organised by Golf Digest and their affiliate magazines around the world.

Both New Zealand courses have recently had their unparalleled beauty showcased by International Golf Course Videographer Jacob Sjöman, ahead of the company’s attendance at IAGTO’s Asia Golf Tourism Convention in Manila from Sunday April 22, 2018. Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers can be found at table 88.

Designed by the legendary golf course architect Tom Doak, the Cape Kidnappers par 71 golf course in Hawke’s Bay has been hailed as one of the great modern marvels in golf. Built on a ridge-and-valley landscape with stunning sea views, the course plays high above the ocean atop dramatic cliffs.

Kauri Cliffs in Northland New Zealand was designed by the late David Harman. Fifteen holes of the par 72 championship course view the Pacific Ocean, six of which are played alongside cliffs that plunge to the sea.

The latest rankings are testament to New Zealand’s draw as one of the great golfing destinations in the world. No longer a hidden gem, New Zealand is renowned as a “must visit” golf destination, with New Zealand recently awarded the Top Asia Pacific & Australasia Golf Destination Award by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO), an award given to the country that delivers a great experience for golf travellers.

Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers have also hosted international-calibre golf events, bringing top golf talent to New Zealand. The Kiwi Challenge Golf Events in 2008 and 2009, part of the PGA Tour’s Challenge Season, hosted international greats including Adam Scott, Hunter Mahan, Brandt Snedeker and Camilo Villegas at the Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers courses. Both tournaments aired across the United States and internationally on NBC, showcasing the beauty and sophistication of New Zealand and these two golf courses to the world.

Commenting on the recent accolades, Director of Golf Jon McCord said, “having both Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers courses named in the Top 75 of the revered Golf Digest (US) Greatest 200 International Golf Courses only reinforces what a fantastic destination New Zealand really is for golf”.

Five New Zealand courses are named in the top 200, with Cape Kidnappers and Kauri Cliffs the highest ranking publicly-accessible NZ courses to make the list.
