Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf crowns Champions at XXXII Grande Trofeu Vilamoura

16 December 2019

Portugal’s leading golf resort played host to the 32nd edition of the Grande Trofeu Vilamoura, Portugal’s biggest amateur golf tournament, from December 4 – 7

Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection, a brand synonymous with national & international excellence, played host to the 32nd edition of the Grande Trofeu Vilamoura, Portugal’s biggest amateur golf tournament, between the 4th – 7th December 2019.

Always played in the first week of December, the Grande Trofeu Vilamoura was played across three of Dom Pedro Vilamoura’s most elegant and spectacular golf courses; the Frank Pennick-designed Dom Pedro Old Course, the Dom Pedro Pinhal Course, renowned for its stunning panoramic views, and the prestigious Dom Pedro Victoria Course – designed by ‘The King’ Arnold Palmer and home to the Portugal Masters since its introduction into the European Tour in 2007.

Throughout the three-day tournament, the golf course was seen in its usual pristine condition and despite the early morning chills, it was an enjoyable experience for all the golfers as they were bathed in constant sunshine and were able to experience what makes Dom Pedro Vilamoura so special.

This year’s tournament did not disappoint with Portuguese businessman Manuel Cândido de Oliveira shooting a net score of 218 to be crowned the overall winner of the XXXII Grande Trofeu Vilamoura. He was followed closely into joint second place by Spaniard Ana Montserrat Martinez and fellow Portuguese player José Valente, who both scored 222. Another Portuguese player Stephane Castro Ferreira was named gross champion with 241 strokes. The ladies gross and net 1st places were secured by Liesbeth Van Den Dool and Arrate Garate with 254 and 234 strokes respectively. It was also a close fought battle in both the men’s gross and net competitions with Walter McDonagh and Willie O’Neill, both from Ireland, securing the respective titles with scores of 241 and 227 strokes.

As well as battling it out on the golf course, the tournament was also a regular topic of conversation amongst all participants at the daily social events. All attendees were welcomed to the event with an introductory cocktail party at the Hotel Tivoli Marina Vilamoura, before sitting down to a cocktail ‘Dinatoire’ the next evening at the magnificent Hotel Hilton Vilamoura. This was followed up with a gala dinner and show at the Solverde Casino Vilamoura, whilst the event was wrapped up with a fantastic buffet dinner and prize giving ceremony at the Dom Pedro Vilamoura Forum, where all the winners were presented with their trophies.

Speaking after the conclusion of this year’s competition, Stefano Saviotti, Chairman, Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection Chairman, said: “This year’s XXXII Grande Trofeu Vilamoura has been another great advocate for amateur golf in Portugal and we would like to thank everyone for attending. We hope that all our guests were left satisfied with their Dom Pedro experience and were able to enjoy all the luxuries that were on offer to them including all our social events. We are already excited to welcome more guests back in 2020 and to host another great tournament next year”.

The sponsors of this year’s event included Hotel Hilton Vilamoura, Solverde – Casino de Vilamoura, Hotel Tivoli Marina de Vilamoura, Studio Calero, Vista Alegre and Atlantis Cristal, Hoteis Vila Galé, Visacar, Norgolf (Nike Golf e Rohnisch), Titleist and Footjoy, Holiday Golf, Under Armour and Tee Video.

With a total of 300 players and 50 non-golfers attending the four-day event from over 15 nationalities, this year’s Grande Trofeu Vilamoura was one of the largest and most diverse in its history. The largest delegation of participants came from Great Britain, whilst Morocco with over 30 players was the largest delegation present from outside of Europe.
