Dive into the natural beauty of the Costa Cálida

20 July 2020

Tourists looking for an adventure holiday this summer can get an in-depth look at Murcia’s history by immersing themselves in an underwater experience like no other in the region’s five spectacular diving hotspots.

The Costa Cálida, or warm coast, is home to Europe’s most comprehensive choice of diving sites, renowned for a number of fascinating historic shipwrecks, as well as a variety of marine life, flora and fauna.

With two protected marine reserves – the Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas and the Cartagena-La Azohía-Cabo Tiñoso – both providing crystal-clear waters and beautiful, captivating seabeds, and even the possibility of finding some archaeological remains, the Costa Cálida offers perfect conditions for uninterrupted diving and discovery.

The Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas was included among a list of the best places to dive in the world by National Geographic and has also been declared the best European destination for scuba diving.

La Manga Isla Grosa, Mazarrón and Águilas offer an equally thrilling experience which will be sure to make divers fall in love with the sea. Located in deserted coves and under cliffs, the calm and warm Mediterranean waters are protected from currents and are the optimum temperature for an extensive range of sea life.

Surrounded by seaweed and marine vegetation, the reefs around Murcia generate veritable aquariums and charming underwater gardens that can’t be seen anywhere else in Spain.

All the diving hotspots offer the opportunity to enjoy everything from easy dives in shallow waters, to more challenging routes recommended only for more experienced divers. For assistance, there are 16 diving centres across the region offering courses and dive experiences for all levels: from beginners, to more technical dives to large shipwrecks, underwater caves and crevices, suitable for the experienced diver.

With more than 300 days of sunshine a year and an average temperature of 19 degrees, the region of Murcia offers the perfect location, with the stunning and serene coastline making it an internationally-renowned destination for diving and many other watersports.

A ‘try dive’ is available from €45 at Rivemar Diving Centre and €80 at Divers, Cabo de Palos. A full Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) course starts at €280.
