Algarve is ready to roll out the ‘greens carpet’

24 August 2020

After months on the ‘red carpet’, the Algarve is ready to roll out the ‘greens carpet’ and greet UK golfers returning to the region’s famous fairways with open arms following the lifting of quarantine travel restrictions to Portugal after the Covid-19 lockdown.

Players heading to the Algarve over the coming months are guaranteed a warm welcome and outstanding golf on courses in optimum condition at what is one of the best times of year to play.

Playing golf in the Algarve has never been safer, with each golf venue following strict public health guidelines, golf courses, hotels and tourist businesses widely approved by the Portuguese authorities’ ‘Clean and Safe’ accreditation and Portugal approved as a ‘Safe Travels’ destination by the World Travel Tourism Council.

The sun-drenched Portuguese golfing hotspot, with 43 fabulous courses along the coastline, has been a firm favourite with golfers across the UK and Europe for the last five decades – and was voted the world’s favourite golf destination 2020 by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).

A spokesperson for Algarve Tourism said: “Everyone has worked extremely hard to make Portugal and the Algarve one of the safest places to visit in Europe, and we’re thrilled to be able to welcome UK golfers back after so many months away.

“While some things in the world may have changed after the Covid-19 lockdown, we can reassure golfers that our courses remain as good as ever and our message is clear - put months of lockdown and quarantine behind you and enjoy some of Europe’s top-ranked courses in a part of the world that is a golfing paradise.”

Algarve, the world’s number one golf destination

It’s hard to imagine the Algarve without thinking of golf, yet golf wasn’t born on this sunshine coastal area until 1966, when Henry Cotton first laid out the Championship course at Penina.

Fast-forward half a century and our alluring region has not only become one of Europe’s premier holiday spots, but also an award-winning golf destination.

With a staggering 43 nine or 18-hole layouts that can be played all-year-round, it’s no wonder the Algarve draws hundreds of thousands of golfers to its fairways each year.

The Algarve is the southernmost region of mainland Portugal, and more than half of its courses decorate the 150-mile coastline, which also boasts spectacular beaches, picturesque rocky coves, quaint fishing villages and a rich cultural heritage.

The Algarve is the perfect destination golfers of all ages and abilities, with something to suit every taste and budget.
