West Cliffs helps Praia D'El Rey hit double top

20 January 2020

Less than three years after opening, West Cliffs Golf Links is celebrating a major new European honour after being named as the best golf course in Portugal for the first time in its blossoming history.

Cynthia Dye’s stunning links-style layout continued its meteoric rise in the golfing world after being voted as Portugal’s new number one layout in the 2020 Today’s Golfer Travel Awards, also helping Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort to be crowned as ‘Portugal’s Best Golf Resort’.

Voted for annually by readers of the UK’s best-selling golf magazine and visitors to its website, the awards recognise the most prestigious golf venues in the UK and Europe.

Claiming the coveted title of Portugal’s best golf course signals a significant new chapter in West Cliffs’ evolving success story, and the achievement helped Praia D’El Rey cement its position among Europe’s elite golf destinations, The resort, which manages West Cliffs, received more than double the number of votes of its nearest challenger, while Praia D’El Rey’s other 18-hole championship course was also included in the top three of Portugal’s most popular courses.

Francisco Cadete, director of golf at Praia D’El Rey and West Cliffs, said: “Portugal has so many wonderful golf courses and venues, so for West Cliffs and the resort to both be voted as number one is an unbelievable achievement.

“West Cliffs has come a long way in a very short space of time and the great thing is that it’s going to get even better as it matures.

“With the opening of West Cliffs and a recent €4m investment in our golf and hotel facilities, we’ve taken the Praia D’El Rey resort to a whole new level and it gives us great pleasure to see this reflected in these two new awards which are voted for by the most important people of all – the golfers.”

The first Dye golf course in Portugal, the 6,382m, par-72 layout was created across 200 hectares of natural landscape, rolling sand dunes and coastal vegetation, and offers sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean from each hole.

Also ranked inside Europe’s top 50 courses, Praia D’El Rey’s 18-hole championship course – which was designed by Cabell Robinson – is set amidst a combination of extensive pine forests and undulating dunes, and features spectacular views over the Atlantic and the Berlengas Islands beyond.

As well as golf, Praia D’El Rey boasts an extensive array of world-class sports, leisure and accommodation facilities including a Marriott hotel, a wide selection of villas, a tennis academy, a luxury spa and health club and numerous watersports and restaurants.

Guests have a choice of five restaurants from which to choose, all serving the fresh and authentic produce for which Portugal is famous, while the comprehensive range of therapies and treatments on offer at the Kalyan Spa promise to restore energy and balance to the body after a day on the fairways.
