Palheiro Golf celebrates 30 years of excellence in Madeira

26 October 2023

Palheiro Golf is celebrating three decades as one of Europe’s new emerging golf destinations, with 2023 marking 30 years since the Cabell B. Robinson-designed course first opened to the public.

The anniversary was commemorated with a public presentation and gala dinner on Friday, October 13 and an anniversary tournament the following day. Renowned chef André Magalhães, who cooked a four-course meal along with Palheiro Golf´s chef Gonçalo Bota, were in attendance.

Nestled on the idyllic island of Madeira, Palheiro Golf has earned a well-deserved reputation thanks to its challenging course, world-class facilities and exceptional hospitality – and several course enhancements are already underway to commemorate the milestone.

Following recent remodelling work carried out on the clubhouse, the club has announced a comprehensive bunker renovation program (to be completed by spring 2024) to be followed by further extending the club’s network of cart paths.

Palheiro Golf´s layout is a jewel in the glittering portfolio of acclaimed designer Robinson, one of the most celebrated golf architects of his generation. The layout is meticulously designed to offer a testing yet enjoyable golfing experience amidst Madeira's lush landscape and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Complementing the course is a range of luxurious amenities, including a stylish clubhouse and the renowned ‘Vista Balancal’ restaurant.

Throughout its history, the venue has been dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of Madeira. Sustainability initiatives implemented by the club include drastic reduction chemicals such as fertilisers and pesticides, the introduction of more endemic plants and trees and reimagined irrigation systems.

Jonathan Fletcher, president at Palheiro Golf, said: "We are immensely proud to reach this significant milestone in our history. Palheiro has been a symbol of quality and sustainability for three
decades, and we look forward to continuing our journey of excellence for many more years to come."

It has been an action-packed year for Palheiro Golf, who hosted the latest edition of the popular Palheiro Gardens Classic in April and the Coral Nations Cup in May.

As Palheiro Golf celebrates its 30th anniversary, golf enthusiasts from around the world are invited to experience this iconic island and its three courses with the Madeira Island Golf Passport, which allows guests to play Palheiro Golf and Clube de Golf Santo da Serra at exceptional value. A round at Porto Santo Golfe, just a short ferry ride away, can be added to create the ultimate Madeira golf getaway.

About Madeira. Belongs to all

Madeira. Belongs to all is the consumer-facing brand of the Madeira Promotion Bureau, which aims to promote Madeira as a tourist destination to consumers and the travel trade.

Madeira, otherwise known as ‘the islands of eternal spring’, is just a short, three-and-a-half-hour flight from London. It covers 740km2 and has a population of only 260,000. On the same latitude as Morocco, the Atlantic archipelago has a sub-tropical climate, a rich volcanic soil and a unique eco-system. It is one of the only places in the planet where banana trees grow next to vineyards.

Located approximately 1,000km from the European mainland – and just 500km from the African continent – Madeira enjoys an amazingly mild climate, ranging from 25°c in the summer to 17°c in the winter, with very mild average temperatures and moderate humidity.

In 1999 the archipelago was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and five areas have been declared nature reserves. The Madeira Nature Reserve covers a substantial two-thirds of the main island, where development is prohibited.

The Madeira Golf Passport costs €360 and offers five rounds of golf at either Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra or Palheiro Golf. Plus, the courses will supply free transfers to and from the hotel.
