Former champions and European superstars return to Vilamoura, facing a renovated Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course, primed for Portugal’s hero event
Algarve, Portugal – September 07, 2020: Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection, renowned as the Algarve’s finest golf course portfolio, is implementing final touches as it prepares for the 14th edition of the Portugal Masters over the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course.
World #16, Tommy Fleetwood is the latest star name to announce his return to Dom Pedro for the Portugal Masters from 10-13 September, his first start in the event since 2016. He will be joined by a whole host of household names, including defending champion Steven Brown, former champions Lucas Bjerregaard, Alex Levy and Alvaro Quiros, global superstar Haotong Li and Italy's exciting youngster, Guido Migliozzi.
Fleetwood will arrive in Portugal looking to improve on his previous visits to Dom Pedro hoping to become the 7th Englishman to win the event in its 14-year history. His trip to the Algarve will be the final competitive tournament before he heads to the USA for the final two majors of the year.
The event will be subject to stringent safety and testing protocols set out in the European Tour’s comprehensive Health Strategy, aligned with Government guidance and public health guidelines, to provide the same environment at Dom Pedro which has allowed for a successful return of top tier European golf in recent months.
Working with the European Tour on the implementations of robust Covid risk mitigation guidelines, Dom Pedro is regularly disinfecting all public areas and has placed antiseptic dispensers around the clubhouse and hotels.
Commenting on the upcoming event, Peter Adams, Championship Director at European Tour: “We have been hosting the Portugal Masters on the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course for 14 years, with tremendous success. The continuous investment and hard work from the green keeping team have enabled this event to excel on the schedule, providing a true test for the professionals and visiting amateurs all year round.

Although spectators will not be present for the Portugal Masters, Dom Pedro will continue to welcome guests from all over the world to play the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course from September 13, allowing them to experience tour-level course conditioning on one of the circuit’s favourite stops.

The 2019 edition of the Portugal Masters produced an emotional rollercoaster, as players battled to keep their place on the European Tour in Vilamoura. This year, the event takes place under different circumstances, although the possibility of Race to Dubai and World Ranking points, as well as prize earnings, will ensure fierce competition once more.
Reflecting on the conditions set to face some of the world’s best players, Head Greenkeeper, Rui Grave, said: “The course is in its best condition for over five years. The renovation work that has taken place recently has enabled the new Bermuda grass to embed itself, providing a tougher challenge to both the professional and amateur golfer.”
The Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course is accompanied by four other championship courses: The Old Course Golf Club, Pinhal Golf Course, Laguna Golf Course and Millennium Golf Course. These are all located within a 3km radius, and collectively, are recognised as Europe’s most complete golf offering.
