PGA Catalunya Resort puts wellness at the heart of golf

11 January 2021

PGA Catalunya Resort is planning a shift for 2021 by placing wellness at the heart of its ethos, facilities and services.

With demand for open spaces and a better quality of life higher than ever before, the resort is responding with new developments and an approach which focus on the emotional, environmental, mental, physical, social and spiritual health of residents and guests.

David Plana, CEO of PGA Catalunya Resort, said: “Being set in such expansive surroundings has meant we’ve experienced a large increase in interest across the board, as open spaces are more important than ever and people are recognising the benefits of nature, outdoor experiences, wellness and sports facilities.

“One of our main priorities now is offering exceptional experiences that always focus on physical and mental health as the core of our philosophy, as well as concepts of personal fulfilment, of course in golf and leisure, and also in real estate developments from our approach to building our low density resort. The new Well Villa concept, with pioneering technology to provide a true holistic living experience, epitomises this.”

PGA Catalunya Resort has long recognised the importance of wellness in golf, from the thoughtful design of its two critically-acclaimed courses, nestled at the foothills of the Pyrenees amid stunning woodland and lakes, to the award-winning initiatives in nature and conservation.

It is a haven that nurtures fulfilment through the environment, where guests and residents can disconnect with the outside world and reconnect with nature.

GEO certified – golf’s international ecolabel – since 2013, PGA Catalunya Resort also earned the IAGTO Sustainability Award for Nature Protection 2020, recognising initiatives led by PGA Catalunya’s in-house biologist, Oriol Dalmau, such as the introduction of a colony of one million bees and hundreds of birds’ nests.

New developments such as the Wellness Centre, due to open in the first quarter of spring 2021, which will combine traditional therapies with modern science to offer a suite of golf-specific programmes, and the interactive Golf Hub, the resort’s state-of-the-art practice facilities, will help PGA Catalunya Resort become one of Europe’s leading destinations for golf and wellness.

Dirk Delfortrie, PGA Catalunya’s Director of Golf, said: “We are thinking about golf in a completely different way.

“Golf and wellness are inextricably linked, and that has been recognised for many years here at PGA Catalunya Resort. Now we are building on that in every aspect of the golf facilities.

“We want to offer more than 36 holes of spectacular golf. It’s about connecting with the game on a spiritual, emotional and environmental level.

“At the new Golf Hub, we are focusing on inclusivity and creating experiences for everyone, regardless of their experience or skill level. From the Sergio Garcia Junior Golf Academy, to European Tour coaching, to social events using our Top Tracer gaming technology, it’s a facility to be enjoyed by everyone.”

About PGA Catalunya Resort
Opened in 1999, PGA Catalunya Resort quickly established an international reputation for outstanding quality. It is ranked the number one resort in Spain by Golf World magazine, which also recognises the Stadium Course in its World Top 100 Courses.
The 36-hole resort also offers two accommodation options – Hotel Camiral, a member of The Leading Hotels of The World and Girona's only 5* hotel, and LAVIDA Hotel, aimed at the active traveller. In addition, the European Tour Destination comprises a discreet, low-density real estate development, with first-class leisure facilities and a select number of villa plots, stylish modern semi-detached villas, and luxury apartments.

Conveniently situated close to Girona-Costa Brava Airport (five-minute drive) and Barcelona International Airport (one-hour drive), the venue also benefits from the recently completed high-speed train line that links Girona (approximately 15 kilometres from PGA Catalunya Resort) to the rest of Spain and Europe, which provides even faster connections to major cities, including Barcelona, which can now be reached in only 37 minutes.
