Seve Ballesteros's plaque commemorating the chip shot for Eagle in 1983

17 July 2019

Founded in 1934, Ugolino has been apart of italian history from the start. Arguably the most famous event on our course took place on May 1st, 1983.

The last day of the Italian open was held at Ugolino, and the field was filled with top competitors.

Severiano Ballesteros, fresh off a Master's victory, arrived at the 18th hole two shots behind Bernard Langer of Germany, and Ken Brown, of Britain.

The hole is a par 5 of about 450 meters which meant he needed an eagle 3 to go into a playoff. With his second shot, the Spaniard champion went over the green. A large crowd, in great suspense, gathered behind Ballesteros as he approached the green with one chance to hole out. Asking the crowd for silence, Seve took his nine iron and hit the ball straight into the hole generating an enormous roar from the spectators.

That incredible determination earned Ballesteros a chance in the playoff (later won by Langer) and a commemorative plaque in the exact spot from which the historic chip had been played.
