Madeira venue announces collaboration with neighbouring Enotel Santo da Serra, which originally served as the 27-hole layout’s first clubhouse
Clube de Golf Santo da Serra is continuing to look to the future after forming an historic partnership with the neighbouring Enotel Santo da Serra, uniting the acclaimed course with prestigious hospitality for the first time.
Blessed with a tranquil yet accessible location just a ten-minute drive from Madeira Airport and the capital city of Funchal, the new collaboration spans 104 hectares of land immersed in serene nature.
Fittingly, the Enotel Santo da Serra originally served as Santo da Serra’s first golf clubhouse before being transformed into a premium hospitality destination. Today, the four-star hotel offers 68 luxurious rooms, swimming pools and a spa as well as the Sabor da Terra restaurant.
One of three world-class golf venues on the islands of Madeira, Santo da Serra has attracted visiting golfers since 1937 and was further elevated in 1991 when the revered architect Robert Trent Jones designed 27 new holes.
The club’s Machico and Desertas courses have hosted 20 editions of the Madeira Islands Open on the DP World Tour, while the younger Serras course has become a favourite since opening in 1998. All three nine-hole loops were designed by Trent Jones, whose other renowned projects include Spyglass Hill, Valderrama and Adare Manor.
João Paulo Sousa, president of Clube de Golf Santo da Serra, said: “This partnership is the realisation of a long-held dream. We are proud to offer an experience that combines the passion for golf with a luxury stay, in a place that values nature and sustainability.”
Mónica Camacho, administrator of Enotel Santo da Serra, added: “It is an honour to join forces with Clube de Golf Santo da Serra, creating a complete destination where guests can enjoy both the comfort of our hotel and the excellence of the golf course.”
As well as their close geographical proximity, the long-awaited partnership between these two iconic properties is a natural fit due to the two venues’ shared values of sustainability and respect for the surrounding ecosystem. The Enotel Santo da Serra encompasses an educational farm and organic agriculture, while Clube de Golf Santo da Serra installed a new €2.5milliion irrigation system this year as part of a long-term commitment to the environment.
Along with Palheiro Golf and Porto Santo Golfe, Santo da Serra is one of the three first-rate venues included in the Madeira Golf Passport, which combines green fees and transport at exceptional value.

About Madeira. Belongs to all
Madeira. Belongs to all is the consumer-facing brand of the Madeira Promotion Bureau, which aims to promote Madeira as a tourist destination to consumers and the travel trade.
Madeira, otherwise known as ‘the islands of eternal spring’, is just a short, three-and-a-half-hour flight from London. It covers 740km2 and has a population of only 260,000. On the same latitude as Morocco, the Atlantic archipelago has a sub-tropical climate, a rich volcanic soil and a unique eco-system. It is one of the only places in the planet where banana trees grow next to vineyards.
Located approximately 1,000km from the European mainland – and just 500km from the African continent – Madeira enjoys an amazingly mild climate, ranging from 25°c in the summer to 17°c in the winter, with very mild average temperatures and moderate humidity.
In 1999, Madeira's indigenous forest, the Laurissilva, was declared a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site. The Madeira Natural Park is a protected area that covers around two-thirds of Madeira Island's territory, equivalent to 67% of its surface.
The Madeira Golf Passport costs €280 and offers three rounds of golf at either Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra or Palheiro Golf. Plus, the courses will supply free transfers to and from the hotel. Additional rounds, including a day at Porto Santo Golfe, can be included for an upcharge.
